Flashing a PC Radeon 7000 PCI card for use in a Mac. If this is your first attempt to flash a card be careful! Info: Someone ("mitch" from the German forums) changed something in the FLASHROM.ROM (configfile for the flashrom program) to support this card. If you have downloaded another ATI FLASH utility, please use only this one. Put the ATI 7000 PCI in a free PCI slot in a PC. Boot the PC into DOS (or in WIN restart with Restart into DOS). If you're using Win XP I'm not sure if this will run from a DOS prompt or not. If not, you can copy the files in the included "A" to a floppy disc and boot from that. Then type the following at the A:> prompt: FLASHROM -i If you get ASIC error or reg map error try the other FLASHROM.ROM (FLASHRM3.ROM renamed and copied into flaashrm2 folder or go into folder FLASHRM1) You will see output such as: adapter | bn | dn | dID | asic | flash | ID | flash type | remap | lock | romsize The ROMSIZE shold be 0x20000 for 128 KB EEPROM, if 0x10000 you have an 64 KB EEPROM. This shows all PCI ATI Cards in the System , if you have more than one PCI ATI card installed in the machine be CAREFUL!!! Take note of the adapter number of the ATI 7000 card (dID 5159) which should be 0 if there is no other PCI ATI card installed. We'll call this number x. First, you should back up the PC ROM that is on the card now. To do that type the following at the prompt: FLASHROM -s x pc7K.bin 128 (don«t forget 128, it means : save at max 128 KB EEPROM, if the PC-ROM is shorter doesn«t matter, alsway give 128) where x is the number noted above (usually 0). Then you flash the PC ROM with the included Mac ROM ("mac7k.bin"). To do that, type the following at the A:> prompt: FLASHROM -pm x mac7K.bin -f or ------------------ NEW: You may use the M208FULL.BIN ROM for flashing ALL in one step. No need to flash on MAC with ATI 208 ROM UPDATER !!!! FLASHROM -pm x m208full.bin -f NEW2: For all users with RAM which is to slow (you MUST have DDR RAM below 5ns (look on the RAM chips there is always an end of -36, -40, -50. -60 or -6 -5) -36 means 3,6ns very fast, -60 6.0 nS too slow for 183 MHZ !!!!! Use in this case the M208MODROMS. One with 183 GPU and 166 MEM, one with 166 GPU an 166 MEM. If your heatsink gets very hot (your finger gets burnded/ hurts : Low doen the GPU CLK also ! In such cases use the M208_183_166.ROM or M208_166_166.ROM , but rename it into a shorter name !!! DOS can only use 8 char names: so rename it to M208_36.ROM (183/166) and M208_66.ROM for 166/166 MHZ (or the name you want, but not more than 8 char) ----------------- NOTE: This Mac ROM won't actually make the card usable in a Mac yet. It will, however, allow you to use the Mac ATI 208 ROM UPDATER 2000 on the Mac to update the ROM to one which will let the card work. This Mac updater won't run on the PC card right out of the box, I've tried it and it doesn't work. Flashing it in a PC is necessary to change the ROM to a certain extent so that the Mac flasher will allow the ROM to be flashed. So the next step is to put the card into your Mac. You'll still want to keep your old card or another card in the machine with a display hooked up, otherwise you won't be able to see to do the following. Download the ATI Radeon 7000 - v208 ROM updater. (Available at http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=17529&db=mac). Run the RADEON 7000 Mac ROM v208 Updater. You'll be prompted to restart your machine. Then, if you're running OS 9: Make sure you have the latest ATI extensions installed. If you don't, make a backup of all your ATI extensions and then update to the latest drivers by installing the ATI October 2002 update (available at http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=14357&db=mac). If you're running OS X: If you have 10.1.x or 10.0.x you're on your own. Basically, make sure you have the latest ATI Drivers. If you're running Jaguar, you should be finished. Be sure to update to the latest version of OS X, which at this writing is OS X 10.2.4, which includes the latest drivers for all ATI cards. Do not, I repeat do NOT install an older version of ATI Drivers such as the October 2002 update! The kernel extensions from that updater are most likely outdated and incompatible with OS X 10.2.x. Then shut off the Mac, connect the display to the ATI 7000, and start up your mac. If you're using Jaguar, you may be able to simply hook up the monitor while you're machine is running and then in the Display Preference Pane press the "Detect Displays" button to rediscover connected displays. Hope this helps! Mark Douma mdouma46@mac.com
